What Size Urn You Need

C.I. is “Cubic Inches” and is the measurement of the volume of cremains (ashes) an urn will hold or accommodate. In general one pound of body weight of the deceased pet will yield about one cubic inch of cremains.

So, if the pet weighs 100 pounds at the time of cremation, then an urn with 100 c.i. should be sufficient to accommodate the cremains. So, a 50-pound pet would need a 50 c.i. urn, a 30-pound pet would need a 30 c.i. urn, etc.

If you want to preserve all of the cremains, then you must get the correct size or move to the larger volume urn.

But if you like an urn that is larger than you need, then that is okay. It is fine to have 50 or 100 c.i. of cremains in a 200 c.i. urn especially if you like that particular urn.

Typical Example of Urn Size for a Particular Pet

Dogs – Very Large Breeds 100 to 150 pounds or more – 200-210 c.i. or larger urn

Dogs – Large Breeds 80 to 100 pounds – 100 c.i. or larger urn

Dogs – Medium Breeds 40 to 80 pounds – 50 to 100 c.i. or larger urn

Dogs – Small Breeds up to 40 pounds -- 50 c.i. or larger urn

Cats – Most cats weight about 15 pounds but can weight up to 30 pounds so any urn based on
the weight calculation.

Hamsters, Ferrets, Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, other small pets – 50 c.i or larger urn

Parrots, Parakeets, Finches, other birds – 50 c.i. or larger urn

Urn Terminology

Keepsakes – These are designed to hold a small portion of the cremains. Keepsakes allow family members to share a portion of the cremains of the deceased pet. A keepsake typically holds one to two cubic inches of cremains. Keepsakes are available as one, two, or sets of six.

Sets of 6 Keepsakes -- This is a convenient and economical way to provide keepsakes for family members who want to share the pet’s cremains. Sets of six can be of the same style but are also available as a mixed set to suit you needs. All come in a velvet case for safekeeping. Most keepsakes hold one to two cubic inches of cremains.

Companion and Double Urns – These urns are designed to hold the cremains of two or more pets. Most ‘Companion Urns’ have two separate compartments. ‘Double Urns’ usually have one compartment and the cremains are combined. These are ideal when planning for two or more pets.
